STRONG AND COURAGEOUS

In recent American history, notice how frequently fear, rather than faith, seems to be motivating Christians. On issues ranging from tax policy to immigration to concerns about religious freedom to terrorism, are Christians motivated more by our faith or by our fears?

What if God’s people simply refuse to be “terrorized”—if, like our sisters and brothers in the early church, we considered the threat of failing to bear witness to Christ a greater evil than the threats posed to our own well-being and interests? What would it look like for us to be STRONG & COURAGEOUS?

This is the Lord’s repeated command to Joshua in the opening chapter of the book that bears his name. Joshua has always been considered among the great heroes of the Bible because of his courage and dynamic leadership. General Douglas MacArthur once listed Joshua among the few truly great generals of world history. President Theodore Roosevelt often said that the Book of Joshua was his favorite book in the Bible. Joshua has inspired many hymns and spirituals because of his character, and because of God’s active involvement in history.

As we will see in this rarely-taught book, when the Israelites do what God calls them to do, they win. When they disobey, they lose. And what God is calling His people to today is to be STRONG & COURAGEOUS.

"Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Do everything in love.” (1 Corinthians 16:13-14)
